Not long ago, I had one of the most unforgettable adventures of my life thanks to La Patrona Sportfishing, which departs from Playa Herradura, on the Pacific coast of Jacó, Puntarenas. Today, I want to tell you about one of the most impressive species that inhabits these waters: the yellowfin tuna.
What is yellowfin tuna?
The yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is one of the fastest and most powerful fish in the ocean. Its name comes from its long, bright yellow fins, which contrast beautifully with its dark blue back and silvery belly. Seeing one up close is a true thrill — elegant, strong, and built for speed.
In our waters, it’s common to catch specimens weighing between 20 and 80 kilos (45–175 pounds), though they can exceed 180 kilos (400 pounds). Their meat is highly prized, especially in Japanese cuisine, and the fight they put up on the line is a true test of strength and excitement.
Where and how is it caught?
With La Patrona, we fish for yellowfin tuna offshore, about 30 to 40 miles from the coast, in deep waters. We use the trolling method, dragging bait at a steady speed of 7 to 8 knots.
We fish using a mix of lures, teasers, and live bait, all designed to attract these fast and aggressive predators. When a tuna hits, the real adventure begins — the rod bends, the reel screams, and the adrenaline kicks in.
An experience I’ll never forget
Catching a tuna isn’t just fishing — it’s a full-on experience. I felt the burn in my arms, the rush in my chest, and a joy that stayed with me all day.
And the best part? Once the tuna is on board, the crew prepares fresh sashimi or sushi right there on the boat. They always bring special sauces and seasonings to turn your catch into a gourmet meal. Eating freshly caught tuna out at sea, surrounded by stunning views, is pure magic.
If you’re looking for an epic adventure full of flavor and excitement, I honestly can’t recommend this experience enough.
