Ocean’s Gold: The Magic of Yellowfin Tuna at La Patrona

I’m a lover of the ocean and sport fishing, born and raised in Costa Rica. Not long ago, I experienced one of the most unforgettable fishing trips of my life thanks to La Patrona Sportfishing, which departs from Playa Herradura, on the Pacific coast of Jacó, Puntarenas. Today, I want to tell you about one of the most impressive species that inhabit these waters: the yellowfin tuna.

What is yellowfin tuna?

The yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is one of the fastest and most powerful species in the ocean. Its name comes from its long, bright yellow fins that stand out against its dark blue body and silvery belly. Seeing one of these creatures up close is breathtaking — they are strong, elegant, and built for speed.

Although they can weigh over 180 kilos (400 lbs), in our waters it’s common to catch specimens between 20 and 80 kilos (45–175 lbs). Their meat is especially prized in Japanese cuisine, and the fight they put up on the rod is a true challenge for any angler, regardless of experience.

Where and how is this species caught?

With La Patrona, we fish for yellowfin tuna offshore, meaning out in the open sea. We depart from Playa Herradura and travel up to 30 miles out, where the tuna patrol the deep waters in search of food.

We use dead bait called Balijú, a type of fish that effectively attracts these predators. The crew tosses the bait into the water to mimic the movement of smaller fish. Once the tuna arrive, the real show begins. The rod bends, the reel screams, and the battle starts — testing both your body and your mind.

An unforgettable adventure

Catching a yellowfin tuna is much more than just an activity… it’s a complete experience. I felt the burn in my arms, the thrill in my chest, and a smile that didn’t leave my face for hours. When we finally brought the tuna aboard, I knew this trip would stay with me forever.

If you’re looking for an epic adventure at sea, surrounded by stunning landscapes and real excitement, I highly recommend experiencing it with La Patrona.
